Artful Pebbles

Jesus loved to tell stories - parables packed with hidden meaning. We see ourselves within the characters and glimpse a bit of God's heart in the process. Modern stories and poetry can sometimes provide a similar experience. Sink your soul into a few of these.

Lover of My Soul
by Wanda Schwandt

Life is distracting. Many voices call out for my attention. Many demands lured me away. All the while my Love whispered, “Come, visit with me." An allegory (symbolic prose).

An Entry From the Journal of Mary, Mother of Jesus

I’m holding him in my lap right now.
He’s so quiet.
It’s almost as if he’s in another world.
I have a feeling, though,
that I’ll hold him in this same position later.
And, for some reason,
I think I’ll be crying then too.

Wheat and Grapes

Mother Earth is in labor
pushing forth
new blood and a new body.
A new baby
A new life
Given to the midwife of waiting hands
as bread and wine,
wrapped in swaddling clothes
and lying in a manger.
Food for animals.

Fertilizer

May my prayer
rise like incense before you, O God,
even if the smell
is that of manure
and of the rotted fruits of my labor
that have fallen off my branches.
Come and harvest
the good parts, O Lord,
and let the rest
be fertilizer
for Your seeds
to grow in the future.
